HOLSWORTHY MUSEUM

Holsworthy is a small market town in the north west of Devon, only a few miles from the Cornish border. The museum evolved from the Holsworthy Association formed in the 1920s and, in the late 1930s an appeal went out to residents asking for items to be donated for a museum. After moving into various premises around the town, the museum found its present home in 1979 in the Manor Offices owned by Torridge District Council.

The part occupied by the museum is part of the old Rectory and still retains the original kitchen cobble flooring and fireplace. The rest of the museum consists of four small rooms containing items relating to Holsworthy town (including the railway), local trades and crafts, a War room and an area for medical and apothecary artefacts.

There are also other resources to help those searching through their family history. In addition, the Local History Unit is managed by the museum on behalf of Holsworthy Town Council. Appointments to view these resources is by appointment only.
School groups and other organisations are welcome to visit, and in these cases, provision can be made for out-of-hours opening.

The Museum is run entirely by volunteers and relies on its small admission charge (50p for adults), donations and fund raising to meet its overheads and operating costs.

If you would like to read more about history of the town of Holsworthy the museum published a book in 2004 ‘Holsworthy – caught in the lens’. It contains many previously unseen photographs and archive material and takes the reader on a journey from the advent of photography to the middle of the twentieth century.
